We've updated our availability calendar to show you which cabins are open through the end of September. We'll push it out into next winter in the coming days.
There are plenty of choices between now and June, and you can book our cabins on a daily basis - one, two, three days, or more. You know you want to do some ice fishing.
Beginning the end of April, all bookings are weekly - Saturday night through Friday night. June, July, and August are beginning to thin out (just like the good agates will), but there's still a decent selection for most weeks.
Blueberries are now being picked! Seems the berries have ripened up quickly. There's no reason fresh pies, pancakes, cobblers and muffins can't be on the dinner table. It appears the berries will hang around for some time, as there are a lot of green berries still and the high bush berries haven't begun yet.
Fishing is going along just fine. Haven't heard of any spectacular catches lately with the exception of these two nice Northern Pike. It's always nice to hear the excitement from someone when the tell they the story of their catch regardless of the size of the fish. These two worked their way into a wilderness pond and their efforts paid off nicely. Still lots of Rockbass being caught, in addition to Pike and some decent Perch and Pumpkinseeds coming off Muskallonge Lake. The Walleyes have been pretty elusive lately, not only here but also on many of the area's other lakes.
The weather last week was absolutely perfect and then this week someone turned on the blast furnace. The humidity has been as high as the temperature. Sure hope this isn't a sign of what to expect out of the rest of the summer. Actually, we have lucked out a couple of times this week because the wind shifted briefly from the north. This in turn brought in some cooler air in the form of fog and gave us some relief. The other day it was 92 at Pretty Lake (5 miles south) and it was a cool 81 here at the Lodge. We haven't picked up a lot of rain in the past two weeks, but we have had a few days in which we picked up enough to keep the plants happy. (NOAA forecast looks pretty good through the weekend)
Check out our availability calendar, as we have taken a couple of cancellations for August. We have a one bedroom units (8) open from July 30-Aug 13 and then we have them both (6 & 8) open Aug 20-27. These units, which are set up like a duplex with a connecting door, can accommodate a family of four or five or two couples.
Hope your week is going well and your air conditioning unit is working fine.
You can always see what openings we have on our Availability Calendar. It's updated whenever we confirm a reservation, so it's the best place to check to find your Upper Peninsula vacation opportunity.
For three days now we have been hearing about this big storm coming in. Well, half way through it and it's been a pretty mild day. We have picked up a couple of inches of a very fine snow and it appears that the snow will be with us for several more hours. But so far the high winds and snow/sleet mix is staying away.
Last week we picked up about 10" of snow. The snowmobile trails are probably in as good of shape as they have been most of the year. If you haven't gotten your fill of riding in this winter you shouldn't delay in loading the gear up and heading north. The amount of snow we have on the ground is light enough that a good warm front lasting a few days might just put the hurt to this season. But right now, it's awfully nice, and it looks like a 50/50 chance of more snow in the coming days! (check NOAA forecast)
Heard our first sign of spring last night while we were out walking Zeta. A Northern Saw-whet Owl was out making his calls known for everyone to hear. If you haven't heard this noise before it resembles the noise you would hear when a vehicle with one of those warning signals is going off while it is backing up (really, listen to its voice on the link above). Upon hearing this noise it usually sounds much farther away then it actually is. We have had success tracking down and then walking up to this little owl while it's making this noise. They usually don't sit too high up in the trees.
SPECIAL NOTE: We have added an availability calendar to our web site that will show what current openings you can reserve. We hope this will make it easier for folks to see what dates are open for each particular cabin.
You will notice that unlike past years we have several choice dates available throughout the summer months. Keep in mind if you are looking to book dates in the summer we book a week at a time Saturday to Saturday (Sat thru Fri nights). Prior to June 18 and after Labor Day we will glad to book rooms for just three or four nights.
Enjoy your day and get outside and do something fun!!!
Picture yourself walking to the end of our dock to watch the sunset. Let another's scheduling problem be your mid-summer opportunity. This cancellation just in:
Two bedroom Lakeside Cabin #2 - Saturday, July 31 through Saturday, August 7
Best bet is to give us a call - this one will go, and we always get to the phone faster than email.
Availability update: let one person's change in plans be your opportunity. This cabin is only available in the middle of July because of a cancellation. Come on up!
Last minute cancellations have created some great cabin opportunities. These are usually booked well in advance, and are hard to come by this late. Jump on them while you can. It's beautiful up here!
Where is the rain? The weather man keeps giving us these small opportunities, but so far the rain amounts have been extremely weak. So far we have measured less than 1" for all of this spring. Saturday (05/08) we woke up to snow on the ground - it didn't stay long as the big rain of the year (1/2") was right behind it. It did help bring out the leaves a bit and the grass got a bit of a boost. Still haven't mowed the lawn yet. The bay by the day use area in the State Park is almost totally dried up now. This is a first for most the old timers around the lake. (NOAA forecast)
During the past week we have had cabin guest doing rather well agate picking. Kevin had a great day last Saturday during all the storms and heavy wind. I bet he had at least 6 good ones. Plus the rest of the group all had nice agates too.
This morning Hal caught a nice steelhead on the Two-Hearted River, and said he saw a few more. Seeing fish in the river is getting to be quite common as the water is so low. Getting them to hit something has been a different story. LOCK JAW!
Mike and his group took a different tack. After a couple of frustrating days of trying to catch steelhead, they took advantage of the winds and went over to fish the Grand Marais pier for whitefish. By golly they did well too! I think the four of them brought home 37 fish. Last night I went over with a couple of friends and we caught 15 fish.
The whitefish should be in for the next month or so. Pike and walleye season opens up this Saturday. With the water so low
we might just have some great fishing going on.
Birds are coming back and settling in now. Lately in the yard we have seen several different warblers, a Brown Thrasher, a Carolina Wren, lots of hawks flying the shoreline, Killdeers, Sandpipers, Swallows and of course our favorite song bird, the Hermit Thrush. (Learn about the Killdeer, and all these birds at the wonderful Cornell All About Birds site)
We saw a beautiful coyote yesterday across the street from the store. A rather large black bear was seen up close just down the road. And, we spotted fresh moose tracks the other day down on the lower end of Coast Guard road.
Cabin reservations are strong thus far this year but we do have some openings yet. Memorial Day weekend we have a couple of our two bedroom cabins open.
June 6-12 one of our lakeside cabin (2 & 4) is available as is #8 (our one bedroom) from June 1-16 and also again June 26--July 3 and again July 10-17.
August finds the resort full with the exception of a cancellation that opened up a lakeside two bedroom cabin and #8 from Aug 21-28. Please give us a call if we can be of any assistance.
Let rain, let it rain!!! Maybe Eric Clapton can help!
The weather has turned to fabulous. Mid to upper 70"s light wind and
so far very few bugs. Last night we were star gazing, it was so nice
out that we had a hard time getting inside for bed. Check out this beautiful forecast!
Blueberries are in good supply and ready for the picking. If you have the energy and the back to
take it, your bucket of berries is readily available. The good
news here is that the picking is just going to keep getting better. Just think about all the things you can bake with fresh blueberries!
Fishing is still good, and his heating up on multiple fronts. Yesterday's reports varied from several pike,
one being over 34", some nice smallmouths, to a nice batch of
pumpkinseed bluegills being caught.
Here's a Muskallonge beauty. Clem was in a canoe by himself without a net. This fish was 44 1/2" long and weighed 24 pounds. AWESOME!!!!
