It's Monday, July 11, and we are sitting through another rain shower. This year we have picked up rain almost weekly and the area looks very good because of it. Muskallonge Lake shows water levels up to almost where it was just when the winter run-off was completed. That's a first in many many years. And because of it, it's blueberry season! Yes indeed, the picking has begun already and the berries have a real nice flavor. Look for them now in the clear-cuts and the open areas. The berries under the pine trees will be plentiful in another couple of weeks.
No big fish stories recently. In fact the wildlife sighting have been rather limited thus far this summer. A few bears have been seen, but only a couple with cubs. A few fawns have been reported, no moose sightings though. The eagles are a daily occurrence on the lake and yesterday a lone swan came in for the evening. Oh, there's also this frog hanging out with his make-believe turtle buddy.
Yes, the current heat wave has hit us and with it of course has come the stable flies. But the weather man tells us this heat will not continue and we will see a high in the mid 60's for the next few days. [NOAA forecast for Deer Park]
Wildflowers are popping up all over the place now because of all the rain. The U.P. is certainly showing it's beauty. Come on up and enjoy it for a few days. It's a great place to hang out.
