Sure has been a pleasant fall as the great weather continued through this past weekend. It just started raining with the strong possibility of it turning to snow later in the day, and into tomorrow. However, weather in the mid to upper 40's is projected through the weekend and into Opening Day of Michigan's Deer Season. [NOAA forecast for Deer Park Lodge]
The season looks like it might be much better than last year, with a number of bucks being reported throughout the area.
I had a nice encounter with a decent eight point buck the other night. He came into my zone, snorting and following a doe. The doe wanted nothing to do with this feller, who ended up facing me, eating some corn I put out, only 14 yards away. This is not a shot this bow hunter will take. When he swung to leave I drew back and had him broadside at 15 yards. Only problem was the big red pine between his vitals and me. He ended up walking away looking for another doe.
In talking to a couple of fisherman, we hear that Steelhead are in the river in fair numbers and there are still a few remaining coho's to be had in addition to several Menominee that are following these spawners up the river. Lake fishing out of Curtis remains good for walleye and perch.
We still haven't seen the migratory water birds that we normally see every fall. Either they have taking another route this year, for some reason, or they haven't come through yet. Duck hunter numbers were way down this year.
