Big and bodacious! That's the headlines for the week. And throw in, bountiful!
One of cabin guests decided to explore the Tahquamenon River with his wife, and maybe try for a musky. By golly, Mitzi hooked a beautiful 43" that must of gone close to 25lbs. The cool part was that Mike forgot the net and ended up landing this fish by using his life jacket as a cradle. Pictures were taken and this beauty was release unharmed ready to battle another day.
Then last Saturday night a Muskallonge Lake monster was caught and released. This one went 45", didn't get the weight or pictures, but it also had to be over 25 lbs. Once again we have a perfect ending to this story, as the fish was released to be caught another day. Also hooked and released was a 40 plus inch pike, again on Muskallonge Lake. Jim our cabin guest had his young son Nick on the end of the net. As it goes with a lot of big fish, this one got away before getting him into the boat.
And finally, this week we saw a days catch of brook trout that would make any fisherman drool. Grandpa came up with his son and grandson and showed them how he likes to fish the upper Two Hearted River. I'm telling you, some of these older guys can really work the river and come up with awesome fish. Grandpa could not be happier, seeing his grandson catch the biggest one - just over 16". Plus, a couple of weeks ago we had a cabin guest, Roger catch one of the big walleyes on the lake and his son brought in a real nice pike. Last year Roger caught an awesome smallmouth, but this year he had to happily settle with the walleye.
Blueberries are everywhere. We've been told that in the clear-cuts they are starting to show signs of drying up some. But, because we have picked up some rain the last couple of days, we should of slowed that process considerably. We've been storing berries in our walk-in freezer for folks visiting the area and every day bags and bags are brought in. It's definitely time to start filling the freezer. Nothing better than blueberry pies and cobblers in the middle of winter.
Today we are seeing and feeling some big northwest winds for the first time in a month or so. So the agates are getting rolled over and stirred up. We have seen things this morning that we haven't seen in a month or so - sweatshirts and jackets are coming out, with the temps being in the mid 60''s. [NOAA forecast for Deer Park Lodge]
All is well in Deer Park. The campgrounds in the area have plenty of room for camping, and we'd love for you to stop by the store if you're in the area. Our reservation schedule is filled up pretty good until after Labor Day [check availabilities]. The big cabin is open for what would be a nice long weekend stay on September 8-12. We are full the weekend of the Muskallonge Lake State Park "Rock On with Lake Superior Agates Show" Sept.17-18, but after that we have several openings available.
Remember, after Labor Day we will be glad to have you spend just a few nights with us. Check our availability calendar and think about an early fall getaway.
