The weather continued to be an issue last week in Deer Park. Just when you think summer has finally arrived in comes weather in the mid 50's with fog and a cold wet mist. For a few days we had absolutely wonderful weather and thenthe blue jeans come back on and the wind and rain jackets are close at hand. But, the weather has been nice so far this weekend and is looking up for the days ahead. (NOAA forecast for Deer Park Lodge)
We are finally starting to see some nice fish coming off the lake. The first big Northern Pike was taken last week by the young man in the picture. The pike measured 37" and went over 13lbs. This family has been coming up to Muskallonge for a number of years and have caught some nice fish, but this one will be talked about for some time. A night crawler fished deep in the trench was too much for this fish to resist. Had a cabin guest bring in a pike that went 31" yesterday and we also saw a 21" walleye. The rock bass on the lake this year are huge and plentiful.
We have heard of a number of bear sightings the last couple of weeks. The bears are moving about as mating season comes near its end. The attached picture we taken by cabin guest as they were heading over to Grand Marais. It's not often you get to see a bear and then have it stick around long enough to get it's picture taken.
It seems as thou all the birds that were sitting on eggs are now attending to little ones. We've had two Robin nests in the yard hatch out. We have a female Mallard on the lake who is very busy tending to her 17 little ones. Plus, most of the Geese seem to be cruising around with at least two little ones each. A number of fawns have been reported, too.
If you are thinking about renting a cabin this summer yet, check out our calendar for available dates. We don't have a lot to offer in the way of vacancies, but if are in traveling in a party of two we do have a couple of options open for you.
UPDATE: The Big Cabin just became available from July 9th through the 15th. It's a great chance to treat your family or crew to a week in the woods and on the lakes. Give us a call and we'll throw in one night free! (906) 658-3341
Check out the visitor to our little pond that we had over the weekend. This turtle decided to stick around for a couple of days and then after eating a good meal of dead sucker minnows decided to move along, probably for a place with more water.
One last note. For the past couple of months the bar at Pine Stump has been going through a total overall. The place is looking absolutely wonderful, and improvements are still underway. New walls, new tables, new entrance with a great room that will eventually become a gift shop, everything is being gone over and either replaced or getting a major scrubbing. Grand Opening is being projected to be sometime in mid-July. Check out their website at pine-stump.com for more details. The whole neighborhood is excited about getting a local pup back in the area and the Whites are doing an awesome job getting the place ready.
