Rain has continued to bless us since last writing the blog report. The lilacs are bursting out in bloom, cleaned and refreshed by the cloudbursts. Pink Lady Slipper, rare as they are, are blooming under the pines. Muskallonge Lake is showing improvements, but ever so slightly.
But, the big news lately was a moose in the neighborhood. A couple of neighbors got a great look at it as it was walking right down their driveway. The young moose got a bit startled when the camera's came out and quickly disappeared back into the woods on the south side of the lake. (Sorry, no picture)
Lots of birds around now also. A nice American Robin is nesting nearby and can be seen foraging on the lawns. We had our traditional Warbler walks early last week. While the leaves came out quickly after the rains we had, we did manage to see seven different varieties in one day. Had a beautiful indigo Bunting in the yard the other day, but it didn't stay around long, as Zeta made a wild move to the feeders.
Also at the feeders on a regular basis has been Evening Grosbeaks. Our good buddy was here the other day and downloaded bird songs on his iPhone. Damn if he didn't call in a Dark-eyed Junco and set him right in our laps.
We've seen a couple of Common Loons and heard their calls echoing around the lake this week. A few Caspian Terns are still hanging around. And believe it or not the eagles on the lake are all over the place. We counted five immature Bald Eagles in addition to two adults at one time just hanging out on the south side of the lake.
The winds we have had the last couple of weeks sure did stir the rocks up and apparently bring some agates in, as several people have brought their treasures into the store to show off.
Fishing has been just so so on the lakes. Did get to see a wonderful Large Mouth Bass last week that was caught on a nearby lake. Muskallonge Lake has been giving up lots of Rock Bass and a fair number of Northern Pike. Haven't heard of any braggers being caught yet, with the exception of a 24" Walleye taken off the boat dock by a young man the other night and a big pike my buddy from Seattle caught and released. Whitefish are still hot off the pier in Grand Marais.
The weather has been up and down and everything in between lately. One day we were up to 90 then 30 minutes later, after a 25 knot west wind brought in an inch of rain, down to 65 with heavy fog on the road and lake. An hour later the skies cleared up and back up to upper 70's we went. If you don't like the weather, stick around for a few minutes because it will change.
Pictures accompanying this report are brought to you by our web site master and good friend, Bruce from Seattle.
Enjoy your day,
Mike & Monica
