Here's a quick re-cap of last week. We had ourselves a great weekend with warm temps and sunny skies. However, the winds shifted to the north Monday night and we were reminded how cold Lake Superior is. I tried to start the day with my shorts on but they just didn't cut it. Monica was already talking about a fire in the fireplace that evening.
Saw the remaining flocks of geese heading north this morning along with a rather friendly Black Backed Woodpecker. Several different types of Warblers have been seen and down Coast Guard a bit a Whip-por-Will heard calling out to us. As we were sitting around the campfire down there we also heard the Hermit Thrush singing away and a couple of Saw-whet owls calling back and forth. (photo credit)
Fishing is picking up around the area. Saw probably the finest catch of whitefish come off the pier that we have ever seen - 24 big beauties. The pier has been producing very well so far this spring. A number of steelhead are still in the Two-Hearted River and being rather aggressive, as are the walleyes, in a number of the area lakes. Got a report Tuesday of a nice one of over 25" caught off the state park boat ramp the night before. If you are up north for the long weekend, fresh fish could very well be on your dinner table. We have found a few morels around the neighborhood this past week. Last night we picked up another 1/2" of rain so with a little warm weather more should be popping up.
It appears that the DNR is going to wait on the closure of the State Forest Campgrounds they said were going to close. I have talked to many of the decision makers this past week and that is the message they gave me. It bothers us greatly that the folks in control seem so narrow-minded that their concept of making these campgrounds work can only happen if they raise the rates. Rather than going back to the original $6.00/night rate thus putting people on the road and helping to stimulate the economy, in addition to giving folks the opportunity to camp with family and friends at an affordable rate. Hopefully some common sense will come out of Lansing. We'll keep you up to date, but you can get more info here. These are the camprounds in our area.
Let's hope this weekend is working out for everyone. Drive safe and enjoy the outdoors with someone special. As always give us a call if you're thinking about coming up. You can check our availability calendar and the NOAA forecast to see what's going on - but we're always happy to update you on the phone.
