Finally it is starting to feel like spring around here. We have had about a week of decent weather and now three nights in a row in which the temps stayed above the freezing level.
The cove over by the state park is free of ice and the rest of the lake looks like it won't take much to open things up. Weather man is predicting a good rain in the next couple of days that will certainly go a long ways in opening up the back roads and getting rid of much of the remaining snow in the woods.
Fish are in the river and the fishing at the mouth of the Two Hearted River has been pretty decent. Guys are just now getting into the Reed and Green area and fishing that stretch of the river. If fishing the river is what you hope to do in the next couple of weeks, new regulations have opened up the stretch of water from High Bridge to the Reed and Green bridge for year round access.
The birds are indeed coming back. In addition to seeing several large groups of robins and redpolls we have a few geese around, a pair of Merlins are back in the neighborhood and we've heard more than one sandhill crane. While walking around the State Park yesterday we did get a good look at a lone Cedar Waxwing. Even had a few Mallards on the little bit of open water.
The big lake isn't quite ready for agate picking. It probably won't be another 10 days and the rock picking season will be on. We'll need some pretty good winds in the next week to break up the tall ice bluffs sitting off the beach about 60 yards.
We plan on opening the store back up for the season around April 27. We still have several cabin openings available throughout May, so if you're planning a trip give us a call, we'll be glad to help you out. Check our calendar to see what's available. Give us a call at (906) 658-3341.
We'll end this today with a few pictures taken on 4-8-11 down on the beach in front of the State Park.
From the top, the first shot is taken from on top of the steps at the State Park. When we got down to the beach we saw a couple of freighters just off shore. These boats were probably running on our side of the lake because the south winds pushed all the floating ice over to the other side. The ice bluffs still have some good size to them. Zeta really seemed to enjoy herself on the beach. This was her first trip down there where we had some open water. And finally, Monica, always the rock hound!
