It sure seems as though the cold weather has got the upper hand over that the warm summer air we'd like to be seeing at least occasionally. Again this morning the temps are in the low 30's. I started the day yesterday in my shorts and the northwest winds kicked in. The thermometer dropped down to the low 40's and stayed there. But the upside is we have gotten some of the much needed rain we were hoping for. (NOAA forecast)
The blueberry blossoms are looking thick and nice and a lot of the wild flowers are out. We even found a few morel mushrooms yesterday while out taking a neighborhood stroll. The good news with this weather has been the lack of bugs. Our sales of bug dope has been very minimal and the complaints regarding bugs has been very limited. Hopefully when the good weather arrives we won't get a huge hatch.
Already we have seen a few beautiful agates that have been found. We are lucky that people come in and share their finds with us so we can see what we are missing. We have some outstanding and very dedicated agate hunters come and go from the area. Our friends Bobby and Kathy were here with their husbands and probably spend at least 6 hours a day down at the beach and believe me they pick up some absolutely gorgeous rocks. The winds we have had the last several days should help continue turning those rocks over and uncovering some gems.
Exciting birds around have included a quick visit by a indigo bunting, lots of warblers around right now, the pileated woodpeckers have been very busy and one of our favorites, the hermit thrush is out daily singing it's beautiful song.
Fishing reports continues to be good in the Two Hearted River as the steelhead keep coming into the system. Saw a real nice lake trout that was taken out of Perch Lake the other day and pike fishing on Muskallonge Lake has been real good. The lakes in the area have been fishing a bit slow as the water temps remain low. Fishing is certain to pick up considerably soon.
No one is swimming yet. You might get a quick in-and-out swim in Muskallonge but you'd have to be a polar bear to swim in Lake Superior right now.
