THE DEER PARK LODGE GENERAL STORE AND LAUNDROMAT RE-OPEN FOR THE SUMMER!
The snow is melting, the ice is pulling back, and it's the eve of trout season. The petunias aren't blooming yet, but it's time to open up the store and deliver the goods.
If you're coming up to stay with us you can count on the same selection of essentials (OK, and some not-so-essentials) available for your convenience and camping pleasure. If you're just passing through, stop in and say hello. We appreciate your business too.
Just took a cancellation for all of our cabins the week of August 15-22. That's right - all of them. We'd love to get these booked as it will be prime time up north. If you have a family group or organization looking for a great spot for a weeks vacation we'd love to have you.
This is a rare opportunity to have your pick of the lodge - or the whole lodge - and put your group in the heart of the Upper Peninsula, right in the middle of summer! Just look at all that blue and green.
The two lakeside cabins (2 and 4), which sit side by side, are really nice if the same group rents them. Cabins 6 and 8, in the heart of the lodge are also great for a small group that want's to be connected. Cabin 10 and the "Large Cabin" are both spacious and versatile. And don't forget about the well stocked General Store, clean and convenient on-site laundromat, boat rentals, and more!
Whether you want one cabin or six give us a call and we'll be glad to work with you. Act quick while the choices are as wide open as the spaces!

Since Easter we have had some awesome weather sitting on us, and
what a nice change it has been. Now I don't want to give you the
impression that we are free of snow but we are
making big progress in getting rid of most of it. Still there, as you can see, but definitely going away. Thank you, rain.
Yesterday
the depth marker that the county uses to measure snow was just showing
the one foot mark. But the clear cuts and open areas are pretty much
free of snow. We actually took off on our snowmobiles yesterday
and headed down Coast Guard Line Road for a couple of miles to access the beach.
Got to admit we did abuse the sleds some as we would occasionally hit a
batch of 30-40 yards of sand.
We found a ton or rocks on the
beach but only brought home a couple of just "so so" agates. If you are
thinking about coming up to rock hunt within the next week you will
probably find access to the beach very limited. The beach is ready, but
we're just not sure the roads you hope to use will be open enough to
drive on.
We are hoping that today's rain and the coming week's weather
will further open up these back roads and two tracks. If not, the
fishermen coming up for the "Trout Opener" may find it difficult to get
back to some of there favorite spots. Speaking of fishing, the word is fishing off
the mouth of the Two-Hearted River has been slow. Of course, run off is in
high gear and the river is running high and fast right now.
The lakes up north here are just starting to open up. In
fact some of the smaller trout lakes in the area may still have ice on
them next weekend. Looks like
surf fishing this weekend might be the key to hooking up with some nice
steelhead.
Here's a highlights video of U.P. fishing from last season, but the folks at Rivers North. Just a little something to wet your whistle until you can get on U.P. here and wet a line!
Have a nice week and keep sending that nice weather up this way.
Get outside and do something today - then give us a call and let us know when you're coming.

Old man winter still has a bit of a grip on us folks up north. We still have lots of snow throughout the area and the ice on Muskallonge Lake has to be at least 18" thick yet. We are seeing a few signs of spring though, so we know we just need to be a bit more patient.
We seem to get some awesome sunsets this time of year and last nights was no exception, as you can see. Even though it lasted for just a few minutes the colors were intense and the reflection off the ice was really nice. Of course the daylight hours are increasing considerably every week. Days get longer by an average of 3 minutes or so per day. Today we'll have 13 hours and 13 minutes of daylight. By the end of the month the sun will rise about 40 minutes earlier, and set about 30 minutes later than today (14:21 - yes!). You can print out a month of sun (and moon) rise and set times for your city right here.
Took a short road trip last week to the Eben Ice Caves, with our nephew Logan, who was visiting for spring break. The caves develop every year from run off of a small creek cascading down a rocky bluff. It is well worth the half mile walk in to see these and to be able to walk around behind them. Here's a nice video (6:30) from the folks at WildWeekendTV.com that might prompt you to put it on your U.P. to-do-list.
It is hard to gauge yet when the Steelhead run will really get going. We have a lot of snow to get melting and these temps need to start jumping up a bit. At this point, for the trout opener at the end of the month, it seems like we'll be dealing with high water due to the run off. But things can change quickly up here so if you're planning a trip feel free to give us a call for an update. You can get your new 2009 Michigan DNR Fishing Guide here.
The Lake Superior beach is surprisingly clearing up quicker than expected. With the constant changing winds, much of the ice flows were taken up to Canada, and then the north by northwest winds started pounding on the ice bluffs and breaking them up. Yesterday when checking out the beach the waves were so high and coming up onto the beach so far that it was hard to gauge what, if any, rocks were exposed. Once we get some nice weather the beach and the rocks will get exposed quickly. None of the two tracks nor the road to Grand Marais are open for vehicle traffic yet. Gotta believe a fresh batch of agates will be waiting!
Do what you can to enjoy the day and Spring, but do us a favor up north here and send us some of that nice Spring weather. The give us a call, drop us a line, and come up and enjoy it!
