October 2007

October 19, 2007

Changes with the season.

Other than being extremely wet this sure has been a typical fall in the U.P. One day it is absolutely beautiful and the next it's raining cats and dogs with the temps in the low 40's. The old adage, "if you don't like the weather in the UP stick around for 10 minutes - it will change," sure seems to be true this year.

Mother Nature  has been trying to make up for the lack of rain we had all summer during this past month. Rain, rain and more rain, with several great thunder and lighting shows, has been with us all fall. The area lakes are showing the effects. Muskallonge Lake has come up four inches in the past month alone.  Of course we are still down a bunch, but at least we are gaining. We are still in need of a good snow fall all winter long.

Fallfishing Our fall colors are certainly on the downward cycle. We peaked about a week ago and then the winds came and away the leaves went. But we still have a good number of maples and birch trees that are looking good.

The river fishing has been great for the past three weeks. Only once have I gone down to the Two Hearted River and gotten skunked. Last Sunday while fishing with a friend I caught seven Salmon before noon. We are hoping that the winds allow us to fish the Superior shoreline this week as the Steelhead are starting to come in and also the Menominee are also starting to stack up at the mouth.

Moose We had three different Moose sightings recently. The best one was a large bull spotted just down the road at High Bridge. We saw tracks of what was probably a cow and a calf on the west end of the lake recently and fresh tracks were spotted on the west end of County Rd 410 last week.

Our yard birds seems to be gorging themselves lately---maybe they know something about winter that we don't.  The large groups of geese we were seeing last weekend have disappeared, and we haven't seen many flight ducks passing through yet.

And last but now least the deer movement and hunting has been very slow up to this point.  Hopefully all that will change soon as I start sitting in my tree stands this weekend.

Deer Park Lodge will be shutting down and locking the doors for a few weeks starting this Sunday, October 21.  We will reopen the store for deer season on Tuesday, November 13.

We still have a couple of cabins available for deer season and we have lots of openings throughout the month of January for you sled heads and ice fishermen.

Give us a call if we can do anything to help you out.

Get outside and enjoy life!!!
